520 _aGamelan: nuansa Nusantara Sounds of the Malay Archipelago presents the general history including legends and myths regarding the origins of gamelan in its various forms in the Malay world. This book also compares the cultural differences and significance of the gamelan in its three forms-the more well-known Javanese and Balinese gamelan and the lesser-known Malay gamelan. What the book is not, is a tome of gamelan's musicology of which there are many more books written by expert and musicians. The void this book wants to fill is to place Malay gamelan into the gamelan's timeline in history and to inform the world that though Indonesian gamelan has a wider global audience and recognition, the Malay gamelan, whose sounds are distinctive, unique and separate from that of the Balinese and Javanese gamelan, exists.
